MONEY MATTERS

The currency in Turkey is the Turkish lira (TL).  However, due to the high inflation – as much as 90% in 2001 - in January 2005, the New Turkish Lira (YTL) became the new currency.  It is advisable to wait until you are in Turkey to change your money into new lira.  Major currencies can be exchanged easily in exchange offices and many post offices (PTTs), shops and hotels.  However, banks can be more problematic.  Even cashing travellers cheques can be a hassle and the exchange rate can be slightly lower.  Some banks will charge and you will need to show your passport.  Generally, the advice is, if a place charges commission then the lower the exchange rate is likely to be.

Main post offices in major cities are open every day from 8am to 8pm.

ATMs are widely available and are located at entry points to the country.  Although the first ATM you come across may offer a lower exchange rate than one in a town.
