MONEY MATTERS

The local currency in Bulgaria is the leva, but for major purchases prices are almost always quoted in Euros as Bulgaria is likely to be accepted into the EU.  In many instances, payment is possible in Euros, leva or any major currency at the prevailing exchange rates.

Currency can be changed at the multitude of foreign-exchange offices in every city, town and major tourist destination.  Most do not charge commission.  These offices are normally open from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 6pm, but those in larger cities are open every day.  Most of the larger banks will also exchange currency., but they may offer slightly higher rates than foreign-exchange offices.  Their opening hours are also shorter – 9am to 4pm – and the queues are often long.  ATMs are increasingly common, especially in the coastal regions.
